Fluoridated Water Banned

By Douglas Yates (Fairbanks Daily News-Miner)
When it comes to water quality, the people of Juneau (Alaska) are among the most informed in the state. In October, capital city residents voted to ban fluoride from their water supply.

Prior to the vote, Juneau residents gained these facts: most of the fluoride in domestic water begins as waste scraped from exhaust stacks of fertilizer and aluminum factories; most European countries ban fluoride; the substance is linked to a host of diseases, including thyroid and endocrine dysfunction, kidney disease, increased risk of bone fracture, and osteosarcoma in boys.
There is also data that indicates it plays a role in dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

In 2006, the ADA issued a directive urging mothers to avoid fluoridated tap water when preparing infant formula. In non-fluoridated communities, the level of fluoride in mothers milk is 0.004 parts per million. This means babies fed formula made with fluoridated tap water (at 1 ppm) get 250 times more fluoride than a breast-fed baby.

A baby’s blood brain barrier is not complete at birth, adding fluoride to its system interferes with brain development. It is not a nutrient. Nobel Laureate Arvid Carlsson cited infant health when he opposed fluoridation in Sweden more than 30 years ago.

Toothpaste containing the chemical carries a poison warning while the U.S. Public Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control call fluoride a major health achievement and promote its adoption. And yet at the same time, the CDC acknowledges that whatever small benefit fluoride might offer teeth, it happens only when it’s applied directly to the enamel. The agency says that drinking fluoride-laced water is at best a waste; fluoride’s desired effects are from topical applications, not systemic.

Recent Chinese studies demonstrate that fluoride in drinking water lowers IQ in children. And because it’s so corrosive, it leaches lead from pipes and solder joints, adding another neurotoxin to the body’s burden.

Fluoride was first used as a rat poison in Germany in the 1920s. In Nazi and Soviet-era prison camps, fluoride was added to water because it was known to produce confusion and apathy. Today, Europe’s major countries ban it from public water, as does India and Japan. In this country (U.S.), about 66 percent of municipal supplies receive fluoride.
Fisheries biologists found that at dams on the Columbia River salmon exposed to fluoride from industrial outfalls became lethargic and confused. They failed to climb fish ladders, spending up to a week in collection basins, where injuries and death increased. When fluoride sources were reduced, salmon moved past the dam without delay.

My comment is on your clip art of the leaking faucet. I have been working for the water department for 26 years and your clip art is one of the reasons I stopped drinking the water. One of the first jobs I was given when I came to work here was to restart the fluoride pumps. The operators were getting irratic readings in their samples. By irratic, I don’t know if they meant too much or too little fluoride. So I went and checked out the pumps and saw where the fluoride had been leaking out of a pipe fitting and the pump head had stopped pumping.
Where it had leaked and dripped onto the concrete pedestal, the fluoride ate a hole right through the concrete. I tightened all the fittings. This piping system is made out of PVC pipe because the fluoride will eat right through, not only concrete, but iron pipe as well. I then proceeded to take the pump head apart to see why it stopped pumping.
Being new, nobody bothered to tell me how corrosive fluoride was or how dangerous. It burned the cuts on my hands (I’m a mechanic and I get cuts on my hands)and the fumes irratated my eyes.
The inside of the pump was all black and gunked up. The ‘Master Mechanic’ told me to just clean it up, that it was nothing more than ‘tar’ and once cleaned it will work fine. So I cleaned it up and put it back together and it worked fine.
The one thing that bothered me after I was done was that no operator came behind me to make sure the calibration on the pump was correct, that they were actually dosing the system with the correct amount of fluoride. But, being the new guy and needing a job, I said nothing and I also figured these guys had been here awhile and knew what they were doing.
I decided to check the system from tank to insertion point to learn how the system works. There were a few leaks throughout which had also eaten into the concrete floor. I looked inside the tanks and saw that they were metal tanks with a rubber lining on the inside. I asked my boss about that and he said the lining was to prevent the fluoride from eating through the tank. Years later I found out that the lining was actually deteriorating over time and that black gunk was the results of the deterioration.
So I figured that if fluoride can do that to rubber and concrete, I really didn’t want that stuff in my body.

Thanks for your comments on this important subject, especially from someone working from the “inside” of a water plant.
We may wish to post your commentary as separate page to give it wider reader coverage and have it linked back to this page.

At this short-cut are some more tidbits about fluoride in the 1950s.

First of all, concentrated fluoride might eat through concrete. The level of fluoride in tap water is 1 ppm, or the equivalent of 1″ in 16 miles. Lemon juice is a corrosive too, as is vinegar and tomato juice, and if either of these substances were concentrated to the pH level of fluoride and allowed to drip on concrete, you would probably have the same results. It would be interesting to learn how the factories that produce lemon juice and tomato juice treat their pipes. I’ll bet they have the same problems. Maybe we shouldn’t be putting those into our bodies either. Oh, wait…fluoride, lemon juice and tomato juice should feel right at home in our bodies because our stomachs contain hydrochloric acid – now THAT could do some serious damage to concrete floors and metal pipes.
How about giving a link to some of your misinformation and half-truths listed above?
Fluoride occurs naturally in water. Fluoride is the 13th most abundant element in the earth’s crust. Fluoride is added to water to bring the level up to 1.0 ppm – the equivalent of one inch in sixteen miles. The Chinese study was done with levels of 3 to 11 ppm. There is no conclusive link between fluoride and low I.Q., ADD, dementia or Alzheimer’s. Not one iota.
They do not scrape fluoride from smokestacks. It IS a byproduct of the processing of apatite, but that’s just half the story. Byproducts and waste products are totally different. Go to the following link to learn more:

I could not find on the CDCs web site where they stated drinking fluoridated water is a waste. However, fluoride does NOT “build up” in the body: it is either deposited in the bones or teeth or filtered out by the kidneys. A lot of things can be used as “rat poison” – many things given in a high enough dosage can kill. The active ingredient in Coumadin, a widely used, lifesaving anticoagulant, has also been used as rat poison.

Lastly, the quote about Nazi’s using fluoride in the 1920’s is a quote (actually, misquote because it says “1930’s”, which makes more sense) from the book: “Mind Control, World Control” by Jim Keith, page 71, who believes in a big ol’ conspiracy theory relating to “UFO activity and UFO abductions”. Read excerpts, including page 71, and the full description at Google books here:
http://books.google.com/books?id=zzY6qjOpSoEC&dq=repeated+doses+of+infinitesimal+amounts+of+fluoride+will+in+time+reduce+an+individual’s+power+to+resist+domination&source=gbs_summary_s&cad=0
I look at it this way: If there were two bottles of water on a table and your child needed a drink, and on one side of the room there were a couple thousand scientists and medical doctors who claim that a chemical added to bottle one was bad for your child and the other half of the room was full of scientists claiming that it was not bad, and everyone in the room agreed that bottle two, with no chemical added, was perfectly safe, which bottle would you give your child to drink?
I for one prefer to have a choice over a chemical added not to treat the water but to tread my child. With the common availability of fluoride products such as toothpaste, there is no excuse in a free society for mandatory medication. Even if someday it were proven to be safe and effective.
The debate over it being natural (as is lead, or lithium, etc) is irrelevant – As are ad hominem attacks or where it is collected. I pay for water and I expect it to be just that. Kill the bacteria, remove the toxins and send it down the pipe.
my 2 cents.
