Toronto Police “Losing Face”

TORONTO Police are working to recruit their first female Muslim officer to wear a hijab, six months after the headgear was approved for use by the force and community.

[Do Canadians have any rights left when offering our dis-approval of this matter??]

And members of the Chief’s “Muslim Consultative Committee“, who helped draft the hijab policy, said they would also like halal food served in the cafeteria at police headquarters at 40 College St., and [also] at law enforcement functions.

[Have we Canadians gone mad... Muslims demanding that HALAL food be served to them at HQ!? These absurdities amply demonstrate how far we have capitulated to the "multi-culti" madness that is destroying our country. When are spineless Canadians going to stand up and say "enough is enough" and inform these foreign invaders to assimilate to OUR traditions, or return to their own countries of origin? Such unmitigated arrogance!

Now, we're expected to submit to their 7th century culture at the expense our own traditions!? And, just why do police managers so eagerly yield to these interlopers without a whimper of protest!? ]

“Its only a matter of time before the first woman to wear a hijab is hired,” said retired Staff-Supt. Cyril Fernandes (Kenya-born, South Asian), a former committee co-chair.

[Police recruits must not be hired on the basis of demonstrating a fashion/religious/ethnic  statement, especially one so foreign to our own traditions. How does this sanctioned dress-code nonsense relate to "fighting crime", or to simply enforcing Canadian traffic laws?

“There is a lot of interest in policing by members of Muslim community.” Fernandes said the cop-issued hijab was approved by Chief Bill Blair last June after months of working with members of the Muslim community.

[Were efforts made to consult with members of the Christian community to ask if they approved of this intrusive, non-traditional dress-code policy??] 

“We met with 15 to 20 of the most senior Imams in the city to develop the hijab,” he said. “They were concerned that it had to cover the neck and hair.”

Fernandes said the hijab is fastened by velcro straps and held in place by the officer’s hat.

“The Muslim community is one of the fastest growing in the GTA,” he said. “Female Muslim officers can better relate to members of their community.”

[If female Muslim officers can "better relate" to members of their own group, how are their Canadian hosts expected to relate to them? Why re-locate to a traditional Christian country if Muslims are aware their differences will most assuredly cause friction between themselves and us? ]

Committee co-chair Osman Khan said he’s hoping Muslim women will be hired after a police hiring freeze is over.

[We're hoping the Toronto police hiring-freeze remains in effect -- indefinitely -- if only to save our  own traditions from this eroding p.c. disease that favours Muslims' self-interests (and racial minorities in general) to the exclusion and detriment of the battered White Canadian male.]

 

“There are a number of Muslim women interested in becoming officers,” Khan said. “We are working with them until the hiring freeze is over.”

[There's also a limitless number of better qualified White Canadian-born men interested in these $85,000 police jobs in their OWN 84% White country... if that's not asking too much!? See: White Males Need NOT Apply]

He said only one woman, Auxiliary cop Mona Tabesh, wears the hijab. Tabesh said it has been her dream to become a (real) cop.

“Even if I don’t become a police officer, it will be an honour for me to wear the uniform as an Auxiliary,” she said recently.

Tabesh hopes her hijab, a sign of her Muslim faith, will inspire other Muslim women to join the service.

[Is this what Canadians yearn for in our police forces when selecting police recruits who may find themselves tackling armed bank robbers, investigating organized crime or matching wits with criminal minds that far exceed their own IQ??

 Would a hajib-wearing Muslim woman be willing to accept the same dangerous job-related risks as this California cop, who was shot to death while pursuing a bank robber after a high-speed chase? Ha! Most unlikely!]

“I hope they feel empowered,” she said

[So... wearing a police uniform is now supposed to "empower" female Muslims?? It must be a great day for master criminals who can only laugh up their sleeve at the slow disintegration of a once-proud Canadian police force. 

 Whatever happened to duty, respect, honour, serve and protect? Or have those noble aspirations been replaced with the demeaning aspect of "political correctness" where  a once-respected profession has now succumbed to "empowering" Muslim women?  Reading this article's contents is becoming more demoralizing by the moment!]

The [Toronto Police] force also has at least one Sikh female recruit who is wearing a turban that was endorsed by the force years ago.

Police Uniforms NOT Uniform

Whether it’s worn by a police officer, hockey player, usher, or soldier, surely the ostensible reason for donning a uniform is to have, well…. uniformity!?

But things are changing in regard to uniforms at that ever-sensitive “service” formerly known as the Toronto police force.

Indeed, the police have announced they’re going to accommodate Muslim policewomen who want to wear the hijab on duty.

Some might hail such a move as another shining example of “reasonable accommodation”. Others, count me among them — look upon this directive as another assault against our Canadian traditions.

Yet again, another public institution appears to be bowing to the tyranny of political correctness — bending over backwards to accommodate certain individuals, some of whom are quite unaccommodating of western values.

The question arises:  What’s driving this directive? Why is it important for the police to have hijab-wearing policewomen in the first place?

Contrary to widespread popular belief, the Qur’an does not mandate Muslim women to wear the hijab.

In this regard, the apparel accommodation isn’t the same as allowing a Sikh to wear a turban.

(I’d also argue there’s an historical reason for permitting Sikhs to wear turbans, given that Sikh military brigades have long been an integral part of the British Empire.) (ELN editor disagrees)

If anything, the hijab is a political statement and a symbol of fundamentalism.

In some cases, a woman wearing such a headscarf is being pressured by her family to do so (case in point, the dearly departed Aqsa Parvez.)

Either way, seeing such a garment as part of a police uniform is odd. Imagine if a citizen was to call the cops regarding a suspected “honour” killing in the neighbourhood and the policewoman who responds is decked out in a hijab? Would this not be unsettling?

Or a real honor killing: Multiple honor killings in Canada: “God’s curse on them for generations. May the devil … (expletive) on their graves … They betrayed Islam.”

Also, the police have surely put themselves in a sticky situation regarding haberdashery accommodation.

For example, if a female police officer demands that she be allowed to wear a niqab or a burqa, how could such a request possibly be denied, given the precedent that’s been set with the hijab?

Indeed, just how far do we take “reasonable accommodation” in the police department?

Do Muslim police officers reserve the right not to work with the Canine Unit, given that many Muslims consider dogs “unclean”?

Will ham sandwiches be banned from police stations due to dietary restrictions?

As well, is there not a profound double-standard at play here?

For example, here’s a scenario I’d find most amusing to observe: Imagine “Constable Duncan MacDonald,” who is of Scottish heritage, waltzes into the station tomorrow decked out in a ceremonial kilt, complete with sporran. How many nanoseconds would tick by before P.C. MacDonald is hauled before a supervisor and sternly disciplined?

Something is indeed rotten these days when it comes to sensitivity issues.

Consider the plight of Tarek Fatah. This moderate Muslim author has been subjected to written death threats from radical Muslims, yet the police have decided not to lay charges.

And, full disclosure: Last summer at Toronto’s Yonge Dundas Square, your correspondent was punched in the face by a hijab-wearing woman who objected to me taking pictures. Even though the assault was photographed and eye-witnessed… police declined to lay charges.

(ST.THOMAS, Ontario) – O.P.P. (Ontario Provincial Police) officers will soon be patrolling Ontario highways and communities in their traditional black-and-white police car (left), adding greater visibility and instant recognition to O.P.P. general duty and traffic patrol.

In 1989 the all-white cruisers with blue and gold striping were first initiated while all the (old) black and white cruisers were completely phased out….. but they’re returning again in 2007.

Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Monte Kwinter joined OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino and Ford Motor Company of Canada St. Thomas Assembly Plant Manager Mark Boldin to unveil the new OPP black and white Ford Crown Victoria cruiser being built in St. Thomas, Ontario.

The black-and-white cruisers will provide a distinctive presence to stepped-up efforts to make ONTARIO highways safer and to bring traffic safety issues in line with other important public safety issues and concerns.

“The black-and-white patrol vehicle will be instantly recognizable as an O.P.P. patrol car with new LED high-visibility roof lights and vehicle markings that will have a greater impact on the visibility of O.P.P. vehicles patrolling our communities and our roadways,” added Commissioner Fantino.

The very first returning O.P.P. black-and-white cruisers will be patrolling high traffic areas of the 400 series freeways by the beginning of March 2007.

The full roll out will follow the normal replacement schedule for general patrol vehicles, returning the O.P.P. fleet of patrol vehicles to the traditional black-and-white configuration over the next two years.

The above photo is a NEW ZEALAND POLICE highway patrol vehicle that sports a distinctive design that has a rather….”sporty look”.

In contrast, the TORONTO POLICE should have conducted a contest to arrive at a more imaginative design other than their new colour scheme that gives them a ‘Crest Toothpaste’ look.

However, the O.P.P. sends a clearly defined masculine ‘law & order’ message with their returning black & white cruisers.
