A report by the Center for Immigration Studies (www.cis.org) reveals some startling figures about welfare use by families headed by immigrants.

“In 2010, 36% of immigrant-headed households used at least one major welfare program (primarily food assistance and Medicaid) compared to 23 percent of native households,” summarizes the document which was published by the Center for Immigration Studies and examines a wide variety of topics relating to immigration. The document breaks down the immigrant families by country of origin and gives specific types of welfare and percentages of the families that used it in 2010. In contrast, 36% of households headed by immigrants use some type of welfare. Families headed by immigrants from specific countries or areas of the world range from just over 6% for those immigrants from Great Britain to more than 57% of those from Mexico using some type of welfare.
This comprehensive study suggests there are approximately 40 million immigrants in the United States of which more than a 25% of that number — and the largest overall group — originate from Mexico. The study estimates that approximately 28% of immigrants — or just over 11 million — are within the United States illegally.
This report is very comprehensive and examines various statistics of immigrants currently residing in the United States. Overall, state and federal aid use by immigrant families is much higher than that used by families headed by citizens of the United States.
The large population of immigrants, both legal and illegal in Eastern Washington —and even Spokane– dramatically affects the state’s budget.

The police statistics show that the rate of offending among the Victorian Sudanese community is 7109 (crimes) per 100,000, while for Somali people it is 6141 per 100,000.
The figure for the wider community is 1301 per 100,000.
The overall proportion of crimes statewide committed by the Sudanese and Somali communities is only 0.92 per cent and 0.35 per cent and people arrested and charged may falsely identify themselves as being from those communities.
For Sudaneseand Somalis, assault offences are the most common type, constituting 29.5% and 24.3% of ALL offences.

I have just returned to London, where I have lived since I was 11 yrs. old.
I have been away for four years, living as an ethnic minority in a monocultural part of the world, amassing a host of stories to tell disbelieving friends. On the whole, I am glad to return.
I shan’t miss some locals’ assumptions that, being a white woman, if I was outside after dark and usually to walk the few metres between my house and the church, (that) I must be a prostitute eager to give them a blow job. I shan’t miss the abuse my priest husband received: the daubing of “Dirty white dogs” in red paint on the church door, the barrage of stones thrown at him by children shouting “Satan”.
He was called a “f***ing white bastard” more than once, though, notably, never when in a cassock. I will also not miss the way our garden acted as the local rubbish dump, with items ranging from duvets and TV sets, to rats (dead or twitching) glued to cardboard strips, a popular local method of vermin control to stem the large numbers of them which scuttled between the rubbish piled in gardens and on pavements.

For four years, we lived in inner-city Birmingham, in what has been a police no-go area for 20 years. We know that because some plain-clothed cops told us when they asked to use our vicarage as a stake-out to bust drugs rings that pervade the area. Having heard a parishioner’s tales of what his (Muslim) neighbours did to him, when he was wrongfully suspected of having grassed up a cock-fighting ring —we refused— explaining that we had to live here, they didn’t.
Even during this time we saw the area change. When we arrived, the population was predominantly Pakistani. Now, Somalis are there in equal numbers. Most of the run-down Irish pubs were turned into mosques during our time.
As a woman, it was difficult for me to gain many first-hand impressions of the Muslims. I was generally ignored by both men and women, and on the rare occasion that I had to interact, when for example a car was parked illegally and blocking my gate, I was addressed as if inconsequential.
When my husband mentioned the “dirty white dogs” graffiti to a local Muslim, the response was, “One of your people did it.”
I have to say that the police response was no better when the local Methodists complained about the same thing. They chose not to believe it had happened, since we had removed all sign of it with the buckets of anti-graffiti chemicals we had stocked since we arrived. They (police) asked, somewhat pathetically: “Are you sure it was racist?”
The Muslim community in Birmingham, for instance, is made up of people from many continents and races, including Afghans, Yemenis, Pakistanis, Indians and Somalis.
There is no doubt in my mind that we need to have the same openness in discussing what is happening to many cities in Britain. If current demographic trends continue over the next few decades, the West Midlands, as well as other parts of the country, will become a predominantly Muslim area.

When I began researching this story about theSomalis, I knew it would be controversial. We were aware that many in Shelbyville were having serious concerns about hundreds of Sunni Muslims moving here. But as I began to talk with officials and others about our new neighbors, I was stunned by the reaction. Practically every person I spoke with locally said they had done everything possible to help out the refugees in adjusting to their new home and were treated very badly in return.
On the other hand, some I contacted for background on this story seemed to be so blinded by political correctness that they would excuse any behavior, no matter how upsetting or disruptive, as “part of their culture.” Did anyone involved in integrating these folks into American society stop to think that many in the heartland of America might not share this overly optimistic and myopic view of cultural diversity?
Unfortunately, the feelings and views of the communities the Somalis move to are almost never taken into account. Indeed, they are expected to simply keep their mouths shut and accept the newcomers without question. Those who protest are labeled “racists” by the various groups involved in resettling the refugees. But many of the problems do not seem to have a basis in skin color. According to a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from 2003, when the Somali Bantu first arrived, “many cannot read or write even in their native language. Only in the last few months have most seen telephones, flush toilets and clocks …”
According to Sasha Chanoff, who coordinates the classes for the International Organization for Migration, some Somalis saw a bathtub for the first time and asked whether it was some sort of boat.
“They really don’t have any exposure to modern development,” he told the Atlanta paper.
Suddenly introducing a society that is literally hundreds of years behind the times in the ways of hygiene, mannerisms, culture and the treatment of women into 21st Century America is a recipe for sociologicaldisaster. It is a massive shock to the Somalis and doesn’t do the local communities any favors either.

There are also the stories that come from other communities that have many locals nervous. For example, in October of last year, SaidBiyad, a Bantu refugee from Somalia, killed his 4 children in Louisville, Ky., and attacked his estranged wife with a blunt object, then afterwards turning himself into police. He slashed the throats of the children, aged 2 to 8, because his wife “disrespected” him, he said.
A difference in culture, no doubt.
If Shelbyville’s Somali community really wishes to “integrate into different societies to live together and to make our future here,” as Imam Haji Yousuf told me, that process must work both ways. The arrogant sense of entitlement(s) demonstrated by these new (foreigner) additions to Shelbyville must stop.
One can not expect a community to keep bending over backwards to help folks, only to treated with rudeness, disrespect and hostility. At some point… our welcoming attitude and southern hospitality will turn into resentment and distrust.
